The format may be a bit strange since I copied and pasted it from Word...

Background Information:
This entire website is designed to support families, educators, and schools in the Wisconsin area in regards to positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) through a federal grant.  The module I’m reviewing is Classroom Management for Academic Engagement module one (rules and routines) - the initial webpage that introduces the 3 sequential modules can found here:  http://www.wisconsinpbisnetwork.org/educators/pbis-in-action/classroom-management.html.
Visually speaking, on the homepage of these module (there are 3 introduced on this homepage), there is a LOT of small text that is very overwhelming.  After weeding through it, the message is very positive to the audience and gives choices to the learners such as skipping around in the modules but recommend going through them in sequential order.  Another option is for you as a team to design your own professional development plan using their “manual for using on-line modules”.  I found this manual document/link to be most helpful in explaining each module and giving descriptions as to the length of each module and what is entailed (i.e. videos, resources, etc).  After reading through the lengthy, monotonous text, I did find that these modules correspond to domains 2 and 3 of the Danielson framework which would correspond to Arkansas’ TESS.  This would catch my eye a bit more if this information was highlighted in such a way that I would want to go through these modules in order to utilize this training as TESS artifacts for my evaluation.
Specific to Module 1- Rules and Routines (positives, negatives, personal opinion):
Again, I am reviewing the first of three modules titled Rules and Routines which can be found here:  http://www.wisconsinpbisnetwork.org/assets/files/flash/ClassroomManagement/RulesandRoutines/story.html
At first glance, there is large serif text that reminds me of the title of these three modules (Classroom Management for Academic Engagement) and a calm taupe background for the module.  I really like that they put the length of the module on the homepage (55 minutes) and have a status bar at the bottom in order to see the progress of the pages running, and you are able to pause, stop, rewind, and repeat within each page.  I did not realize at first that this module ran on its own with a moderator speaking, so it took me a while to figure out that I needed to turn my volume up; however, I do enjoy that this module is self-running, so you can sit back and relax a little.  The module runs from the Welcome page all the way through the Self Reflection Checklist (8 pages later) in which it pauses for you to fill out a self-reflection of how rules and procedures occur in your individual classroom environment as well as school wide.  This checklist was found in the resources tab which I was easily directed to with a large arrow pointing to it, and it was the first one in sequence to choose from.  The module then stated that it would pause until I finished the checklist, and then I am to choose a large NEXT button in order to continue- this was very helpful, and it did not make me feel dumb with the direction arrows.
Another interactive and engaging technique used later in the module came during the “What is your attention signal” page which asked you to report out to a larger group how you get student’s attention- the module paused until you physically clicked NEXT in order to give ample time for discussion and reporting out.  The very next page was another interactive assignment which wants you to watch 4 one minute videos (all links worked) and report out to your group what type of signal was demonstrated in the video (traditional, responsive, or culturally responsive)…you then were asked to discuss your own attention signal and in which category did it fall to the group you are watching this with.
The next activity involved another resource which was a downloadable word document for Activity 1.2 that allows you to fill in a school wide and classroom specific routine and procedures plan.  This resource was pointed out by yet another large arrow and the page was paused until you have completed the activity and click NEXT.  The form for Activity 1.2 is extensive and is explained thoroughly step by step by the moderator- the page pauses after each step so as to give your team time to complete each step as the moderator explains it.  After a few more pages, another short video is embedded (no link required) into the module that is a bit lengthy after going all this way- a 4 minute + video with synthesized singing was not something that engaged me!
Towards the end of the module there is a step by step reflection plan that allows time to reflect, make changes, and form a plan to implement new strategies for the next school year.  After that page, I really enjoy seeing recommendations on how you can improve your own classroom management in which the moderator gives examples on what you can do and follow up on.  The end of the module concludes with thank you’s and acknowledgements.
Reflection/Conclusion:
I first apologize for being a bit wordy as I tend to dissect everything that is around me.  I really enjoyed going through this module and actually got a lot out of it.  This was easy to navigate, relevant, and there was only one video link that did not work because of the video compression.
What I loved/enjoyed about this module:
Ø  There is a transcript option
Ø  Every example and video given had 2 options- primary (kindergarten) or secondary
Ø  Pages are moderated and changed very quickly (within one minute) to allow for comprehension
Ø  Videos are typically kept within one minute (only found one that wasn’t)
Ø  Module made it really easy to start and stop and continue if module must be completed over multiple days or sessions
Ø  If the moderator asked you to perform an activity, the steps were listed on the screen and read aloud
Ø  At the end the “How can I improve page” gave great recommendations for improving your overall classroom management
Ø  User friendly and easy navigation
Areas for improvement in regards to this module (not too many actually):
Ø  One irrelevant and goofy video that I did not get anything out of
Ø  Under the resources tab (where the downloadable word documents are found), there were several word documents that are just for reference, but were never mentioned…only the ones that were used in the activities were mentioned
Ø  I would have found it beneficial for the module to have text that states to turn the volume up now
Ø  The module can actually occur over several months as it asks you form a behavioral lesson plan, implement it, and then have a self-correction plan for when it does not work…this could take quite a while to accomplish
WBI Rubric scores:
        All areas scored 5’s except:
Indicator
Score
Rationale
7.  Learning achievement adequately evaluated
3
Achievement was not scored on how much was learned throughout the module, but rather based on your improved classroom management skills overall; there is a pre and posttest on the original homepage that did not work
8.  Evaluation criteria clearly expressed
2
Evaluation did not occur based on learnings in the module, but rather self-evaluation of your own routine and procedures- there is a pre and posttest on the original homepage that did not work
12.  Providing positive feedback and feeling of accomplishment
2
The only feedback would have come if I were to go through this module in a group setting
15.  authorship and date clearly stated
3
No date
17.  Use of multimedia
4
Irrelevant and unnecessary video used
18.  Mechanical aspects
4
Compressed video would not work

I have not used many online learning modules and found this very interesting. Especially since it was for professional development.
I think a key to the good design was consistency. This allows for ease of use in all modules.

  2. I really enjoyed reading your post. Your post is a really great example to start off this blog. I haven't posted on many blogs and it gives me ideas of how to setup my own. Pinterest is an awesome tool that I love looking at for recipe or art ideas. They had a post on classroom management that I thought was really cool as well and that I think might be helpful.

  3. I really enjoyed this article. My major in college was business administration, but a lot of these teaching techniques I could use in the business world, in order for training new employees. I also am currently a Grad Assistant here for the UCA men's basketball team. So I could even use some of these teaching tools to learn how to help these young men grow through educational and athletic success.

I also have to agree with Tiffany above on Pinterest. I know it might be weird hearing that a guy has a Pinterest, but I actually use mine quite a bit. I find tons of health cleanses, workout ideas, stretching poses, etc. all for being succesful as a former basketball player now turned coach.

  4. I was intrigued by your post. First I really like that you broke it down and really made it easy for me to understand the point of the post. I think this module sounds very well planned. With the videos mostly being under a minute, I think teachers would be more inclined to use this. I know sometimes it's extremely hard to find the time to work through everything online modules include.

    1. Yes, Carrie, I agree...I think that by being able to break this module up into several sessions and that the videos are under 1 minute, it would keep our attention much easier!

  5. I do think it is very interesting how our learning, as educators, is changing. I love the fact that there are online modules to help with staff development. I am a Media Specialist for the Greenbrier School District and part of my job is staff development. Recently, I trained our teachers on BloomBoard, and after the session I created online tutorials for them to refer back to. This module, that we looked at, was WAY more in depth than mine, but I like having resources set up for the teachers that they can access at any time.

I, too, agree that is was a bit too much information on the home page. A little overwhelming.

    Good start to our Blog!

  6. With the busy world of adult learners, online technology is a blessing! It sounds like this module was user friendly and informative. I really like that it encourages reflection which leads to application. The home page was a lot of information and was a little bit of a put off. Lesson learned, however, to break up information succinctly and in small sets. Thanks for your hard work and I enjoyed your insight.

  7. I was a little overwhelmed when I went to the page. It's not a page you want to casually skim, but upon really reading the material I found great information. The module is user friendly with the ability to control when and how quickly students, including adult learners, absorb information. Sometimes staff development is better at night. I have grown very fond of odd class hours.

  8. Rachel, I thought you did a great job finding this interesting module. I thought it was well organized and very professional looking. I had a few issues, but they were items you had mentioned yourself in your review. I also felt the opening page had too many words. I thought there could have been a greater impact if certain titles had been in a larger font than the other writing. I liked the manual that was in a Word document that could be used to outline the various aspects of the module. Rachel I agree with your comment that there should some indication to have you audio volume up, just in case. I really enjoyed the guided commentary through the modules as well. Great job in your find and the overview you provided of this site.

  9. One of the goals for learning is that the students have access to sources of information. I like the way this module allows learners to repeated access information as needed. Sometimes it is good to return to information multiple times, as new questions and needs arise after reflection. I tend to agree with the other commentators that the home page was too cluttered and that it made the module a bit off-putting. But I also agree that the time flexibility offered by online modules is valuable to many adult learners. It is so easy to become so saturated by information that we aren't able to learn anything. I am astonished that, although we are expected to address this problem as teachers, it seem to be ignored by many professional development presenters. Being able to take breaks, and crunch the content into parts over time can improve the learning process. At least, it is nice to have that option. This module provides that option.

  10. Great Job! I also like how the video was self running, but you could stop it when you needed to. I also liked how it allowed you time to reflect on your own classroom and how your rules and routines functioned. On the home page there were too many hyperlinks impeded in the information. They became too distracting.

  11. I thought this was a very impressive website. The organization and navigational qualities were very well designed. I agree that there was a lot of small print, and it seemed like there was no end to the information. However, if an experienced person knows what he or she is looking for, they are sure to find it with no problem. The module was equally well designed. Combining audio with visual is always more effective in delivering information. I particularly liked the animation of text and/or graphics with each slide. This helps to reduce monotony. Also, the “Self-Refection Checklist” is very useful for tracking progress and indicating if there is an area you would like to improve on. This supports the very beneficial practice of repetition. The more repetition you have, the longer you will remember what you have learned.

  12. Rachel,

I agree with many of the items you mentioned about the module and the home page design. It is already a pretty well-designed WBI on the internet! :) However, they could have improved the text organization on the home page by using more white space and bullet or other lists to make information easier to scan for busy teachers.

Also, they could have written on the page that the modules are recorded ppt with audio.

As far as the recorded ppt with audio, they did a really good job with providing the transcripts and outline so that people can jump to wherever they need and review the part that might be unclear to them. And, the production with the one-minute video and other materials embedded through the ppt was pretty good already. They paid attention to people's attention span, and used the features of video for teaching the relevant skills. However, the amount of information can still be overwhelming with such a long presentation and all the information... :)

  13. I also enjoyed the site. Graphics are not overwhelming. Tabs are set for each audience. Parents, coaches, and educators are listed. Each tab also included important dates. Resources are also listed for each audience. This site makes it easy for several audiences to access important information.
